This experience was defined by the amazing professors who were deeply committed to helping us become the best versions of ourselves, preparing us not just for post-graduation, but for life.

In my Consumer Behavior Marketing class, my professor encouraged us to be inquisitive and proactive. He emphasized the importance of “giving them a call,” encouraging us to reach out to potential employers or mentors, ask for just five minutes of their time, and make the conversation worthwhile by presenting concrete evidence of our value. This approach was instrumental in shaping my career mindset, emphasizing the importance of initiative, and making a compelling case for oneself. Another standout was my Sociology class, where the professor's eagerness to learn from us was as strong as his desire to teach, which fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse perspectives. Finally, in my International Business course, the heavy emphasis on presentations provided me with crucial skills for my future career in the business field. The frequent presentations demanded confidence, thorough preparation, and the ability to engage an audience effectively while enhancing my public speaking abilities.

On a more personal level, living abroad made me more Amy standing on a balcony in Cinque Terre, Italyopen-minded and aware of other cultures and perspectives. Navigating new cities, engaging with locals, and adjusting to social norms made me fiercely independent. Through conversations with people on planes and in cafes, learning their stories and sharing mine, my experience abroad and appreciation for Europe was deepened. Additionally, studying abroad significantly improved my communication skills, especially in non-English speaking environments. Since being home, I have found myself to be more patient and understanding of non-English speakers in the US, having experienced the challenges of not knowing the local language first-hand.

From living in Italy and understanding the culture, I learned to appreciate a different pace of life. The Italian work-to-live mentality contrasted sharply with the US live-to-work mindset. I enjoyed the slower pace, where people walk leisurely, shop daily for fresh food, and savor long meals at restaurants without feeling rushed. This approach to life, valuing tradition, history, and personal connections, left a lasting impact on me and is oneAmy standing by the sea in Italy I will continue to carry with me and share with others.

In conclusion, my semester abroad was a transformative experience that enhanced my academic knowledge, career readiness, and personal growth. It taught me to be proactive, confident, and open to new perspectives, which are all skills that will serve me well throughout my life. I was uncertain about what to expect prior to this semester abroad, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I not only learned a lot from the experience, but I also met some of my best friends, both from MSU and other universities. These friendships, formed through shared experiences and adventures, are bonds I know will last a lifetime. My advice to anyone considering this opportunity is to take it if you can. I had some doubts about spending an entire semester away, but looking back, I would have deeply regretted not taking this chance.
