The Center for Gender in Global Context, MSU Department of Anthropology, and African Studies Center are delighted to extend an invitation to attend our upcoming book talk with Dr. Emily Riley, titled "Teraanga Republic: Women's Authority & Politics in Senegal."

In this book talk, Emily Jenan Riley (Asian and African Studies, El Colegio de México) unveils the importance of women's patronage politics in a Muslim-majority Senegal expressed through teraanga—a pivotal concept in the Wolof language referencing hospitality, generosity, and honor. Riley challenges perceptions of governance, gender and politics, authority, and religion on a global scale, revealing the interconnectedness of republican, Indigenous, and Islamic ways of enacting politics.
