October - LGBTQ+ History Month

 

LGBTQ+ History Month is an international event that is meant to honor and celebrate the history and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people throughout history. 

This month, we are celebrating by highlighting the achievements of our affiliated faculty, as well as providing resources for students, staff, and community partners. Read more below to check it out!

Affiliate Spotlights

Jae A. Puckettjaepuckett.jpeg

Dr. Puckett, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, conducts research that documents experiences of stigma and marginalization encountered by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals and the negative health outcomes of prejudice, with a primary focus on the lived experiences of transgender and gender diverse individuals.

They published 6 articles in 2022, including the most recent: Transgender and gender diverse individuals’ daily experiences of rumination. They also recently received an R01 grant from NIMHD to co-lead a 4 year study of resilience in the lives of trans folks. The project will use a community engaged approach that centers the lived experiences of transgender people in the measurement of resilience.

Kaston D. Anderson-Carpenter

Dr. Anderson-Carpenter, Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Director of the Advancing Community Empowerment and Social Justice (ACES) Laboratory, focuses his research on substance use, health disparities, and LGBTQ and other marginalized populations. He has published extensively in journals of medicine, psychology, and queer studies, and continues to work to understand how social determinants contribute to inequity in underserved communities and investigate the community processes that facilitate positive social and environmental change.

Most recently, he published 8 articles in 2022, including "Do Spirituality, Rurality, and LGBTQ Support Increase Outness and Quality of Health in Gay and Bisexual Men?" and "PANEL 10: ADAPTING BEHAVIORAL HEALTH RESEARCH AND PRACTICE DURING COVID-19 TO IMPROVE LGBTQIA plus HEALTH."

Hui Liu

Dr. Hui (Cathy) Liu is a Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Sociology, as well as the Director of the Family and Population Health (FPH) Laboratory at Michigan State University. Her current work includes LGBTQ health at the population level and sexuality of older couples, and she has published many articles on the topics of family, marriage, and health.

Most recently, Dr. Liu published "Marriage and Health: The Well-Being of Same-Sex Couples," which presents new perspectives that address current opportunities and challenges faced by people in same-sex unions in multiple domains of well-being, including physical and mental health, social support, socialized behaviors, and stigmas.

Gender and Sexuality Campus Center

The mission of the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center is to celebrate, affirm, and support Queer and Trans individuals and communities at Michigan State University. We strive to create a more just and equitable campus for people of all genders and sexualities, centering the voices of Black and Indigenous people of color. We enact this work through advocacy, education, programming, and community-building.

Unconditional Love Fund

The Unconditional Love Fund was created to provide LGBTQIA2S+ Michigan State University students with flexible assistance in a timely manner to address extraordinary and unexpected financial hardships associated with their sexual and/or gender identity. Funds are available to students who apply to The Gender and Sexuality Campus Center who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses due to temporary hardship related to unforeseen or emergency situations. This funding does not need to be repaid. Financial awards are made available to assist students with expenses that support their health, wellness, and safety.

TransAction

TransAction is a student org that seeks to build a sense of community among MSU students who are transgender, nonbinary, and/or gender non-conforming, as well as to defend their rights and advocate for their specific social, educational, and cultural needs. These students often face harassment, hostility, and discrimination in every area of their lives, including when interacting with the university. A supportive network will help combat the transphobia, cissexism, transmisogyny, and isolation that these students frequently experience.

Arc

Arc is a registered student organization at Michigan State University that began in 2018. We work to connect LGBTQIA+ students across campus to create real friendships in the community. Our goal is to build a support network for students in a relaxed and positive social environment. We do this through weekly meetings consisting of games, movies, events, socializing, and other fun activities!

MSU A-Spectrum

This student organization holds weekly meetings for students who identify as part of the Asexual, Agender, or Aromantic spectrum.

MSU Employee Pride and Inclusion Coalition (EPIC)

It is the mission of EPIC: Employee Pride and Inclusion Coalition to create an inclusive and welcoming community that supports faculty, staff, and administrators of diverse sexual and gender identities. We view our work through an intersectional lens, centering those with multiple marginalized identities.

MSU Libraries Archives

MSU Libraries Special Collections began collecting Gay and Lesbian material in the 1970s thanks to the work of bibliographer Anne E. Tracy. Since then, the collection has evolved to collect the individual voices of the LGBTQIA2S+ community.

The LGBTQ+ collection currently holds material that ranges from archival records, ephemera, printed art, periodicals, popular literature, recorded music, and zines. Historic pamphlets, leaflets, and manifestos contain topics such as the Gay Liberation Movement, AIDS activism, same-sex domestic partnerships and marriage equality. The archival collections include records of local and regional organizations, as well as personal papers of members of the Michigan LGBTQIA2S+ community.

Lansing's only LGBTQIA+ community center, Salus Center serves Lansing’s LGBTQIA+ communities as a gathering space and information hub. They advocate for the rights of our community members by honoring and affirming the interconnectedness of oppression. You can find them here: https://www.saluscenter.org/

The Lansing Association for Human Rights, lovingly known as LAHR, is one of the oldest LGBTQIA advocacy organizations in Michigan. Their vision is a Michigan that values all people. Queering Medicine is a grassroots advocacy organization made up of queer people working to improve health outcomes for LGBTQ+ people in the Greater Lansing area using science-informed knowledge and practice. To accomplish their goals, they build coalitions and partnerships, generate new knowledge, disseminate information, and help address barriers to healthcare access. The Detroit-based Ruth Ellis Center (REC) has established a national reputation for quality and innovation in providing trauma-informed services for lesbian, gay, bi-attractional, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ+) youth, and young adults, with an emphasis on young people of color, experiencing homelessness, involved in the child welfare system, and/or experiencing barriers to health and wellbeing.
