Even though I was only there for a short time, I felt like I had made a huge impact on both the animals and the conservation efforts.

When I first arrived at my internship, I originally had thought I would be working mainly with cheetahs and that this study abroad experience would only teach me about animal conservation. To my surprise, this assumption of mine was far from the truth. In fact, there were a multitude of animal species that I was able to gain hands-on experience with.

Along with gaining hands-on experience with exotic animals, I also learned some amazing facts about South Africa’s wildlife and culture. While in South Africa, I learned that the wildlife in South Africa plays an important role in the lives of those who live there. Not only do the animals hold an important role in their culture and history, but caring for wildlife also increases job opportunities.

During my internship, I got to help prep meat and feed both adult and baby cheetahs. I also got to help with cleaning enclosures and interacting with the different exotic animals. This included cheetahs, lions, servals, caracals, meerkats, and bush babies. My favorite part of the internship was helping to build a permanent enrichment tree house for one of the caracal cats.
I know that there are students out there who are thinking about studying abroad, and I hope that they decide to pursue this dream like I did. I am so glad that I did not hold back from fear.

Every day was filled with excitement and purpose. Even though I was only there for a short time, I felt like I had made a huge impact on both the animals and the conservation efforts.

My experience abroad not only impacted me professionally, but it also impacted me personally.

On a professional level, this internship confirmed my passion for becoming a veterinarian. I also learned so much about exotic animal care, including exotic animal nutrition, safe darting practices, telemetry tracking, the importance of genetic diversity, and so much more. Getting to be a part of this internship also increased my interest in animal research.

On a personal level, I have become more confident, independent, open-minded, and sociable.

I know that there are students out there who are thinking about studying abroad, and I hope that they decide to pursue this dream like I did. I am so glad that I did not hold back from fear, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity I was given to go on this amazing journey.
