Opened door of understanding

With my minor in Women’s and Gender studies, I especially loved our trip to the San Antonio Women’s Coop, where I was able to talk to and learn more about these women and their culture.

When we first stepped out of the airport, I remember thinking about how vivid everything was; it was like a whole new world. Everything was so bright and vibrant: the sky, the plants, the buildings, the clothing. Every color of the rainbow, and all we had done was step off the plane.

This program has allowed me to think about my career goals, and what it means to be a healthcare worker. While in San Ignacio, I noticed a clinical laboratory science laboratory, and it sparked my interest. I would love to have the chance to return to Belize or travel to other countries and work as a travel technician, helping to serve rural areas and teach about medical lab science. With my minor in Women’s and Gender studies, I especially loved our trip to the San Antonio Women’s Coop, where I was able to talk to and learn more about these women and their culture. It felt good to know that I am going down the right track and that this program was able to solidify my passions.

Studying abroad does not only allow you to learn about the topics that you are signed up for, but it gives you the chance to practice and learn other skills that you may not be able to while in school. This experience allowed me to practice basic Spanish, although most conversations were carried in English. It has encouraged me to continue to learn Spanish, since I wish I understood more so I had the opportunity to converse with those who could not speak English. Additionally, I got to learn more about embroidery.Audrey standing on top of a Mayan ruin I have embroidered in the past, but not since high school. While on one of our cultural excursions, we learned more about the importance and meaning behind the patterns on traditional clothing. This was an amazing experience, as I not only got to practice a craft, but also learn the cultural meaning behind it for the Yucatec Maya.

As a student from a low-income family, I would not have this opportunity had I not received scholarships and financial support. By being presented with the chance to go abroad, I have gained so much personal and world knowledge that would otherwise not be possible. It has opened doors of understanding, culture, and excitement that I didn't know existed. This program has sparked my passion for exploration and cultural integration, and I now hope to continue traveling after graduation.

I would recommend studying abroad for anyone who has the ability to. I would especially recommend this specific program, as it was so much fun and a great learning experience.
