Intersectional Discrimination of African Women Migrants in Istanbul: From Lives in Transit to Irregularity

Dr. Elitok’s presentation will discuss the findings of empirical research based on focus group discussions conducted with female African migrants (FAMs) in Istanbul. The findings shed light on the working and living conditions of FAMs and analyzes their migration experiences as blacks, women and irregular migrants.

Seçil Paçaçı Elitok is a visiting adjunct associate professor at CERES (Center for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies) at MSU. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of Utah in 2008. Dr. Elitok has worked at the Hamburg Institute of International Economics and at the Istanbul Policy Center at Sabanci University. She also consulted for the World Bank on international mobility research projects. Prior to coming to MSU, Dr. Elitok was a post-doctoral research fellow at the MiReKoc (Migration Research Center at Koc University). Her main research interest is international migration with a specific focus on migration to and from Turkey, as well as high-skilled migration, return migration and remittances.
